I version-track that file with git, and I keep a backup that way on GitHub (this way I can also use the bib file in Overleaf projects, by syncing the bib file from that git repo). For about a year and a half, I've been using Zotero with the crucial Better BibTeX plugin, and simply have it auto-export my whole library to a Bib(La)TeX file. Personally (and also like the OP) I'm really only interested in using a citation manager for maintaining a master bib file for TeX projects. If you just want to build a database of web documents with their info, go with Zotero. So if you are willing to dive deeply into the techie details, I suggest JabRef. (It took me years to find that shortcut!) I use Notepad++ to open the bib file, fix the error, and resave.
If it gives me an error message when compiling, the line number is included in the error message. If I have capitalization problems, so far that can be solved by careful use of braces or double braces. Now I use that LaTex markup in the author field, and I use Schroedinger in the LastName_FirstWordinTitle_Year string in the Bibtexkey that calls the database entry from the text.

I did have some difficulty deciding how to enter author names such as Schr\"dinger. I have done all of these and more, and also changed to the Biblatex version. In JabRef I can define new types of document entries, change the fields included in an entry type, and define new output formats for a reference list. Zotero is good to get the info from the web for you if it is available, but customization is limited. I have over 4000 documents of various types in Zotero but moved the entire database to JabRef and no longer use Zotero.
